Afghan Taliban appointed Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar as a new leader of their Political Team, who is participating in direct peace talks with the US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad. The appointment of Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar is to strengthen and properly handle the ongoing negotiations process with the United States, according to The Afghan Taliban press release held by The Arba News Today. Mullah Abdul Ghani was arrested by the joint team of CIA and premier Pakistani Intelligence Agency ISI, in 2010. He was released from Pakistani prison in October 2018. This release had come at a time when the United States had started directly talking to the Taliban. It is not cleared yet that how soon Baradar could join the peace talks. Akhunzada Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar is an experienced military strategic commander. He played a pivotal role in coordinating Taliban insurgency during the US-led invasion in Afghanistan. He was the co-founder of Afghan Taliban in 1994, he served as a deputy commander to Mullah Omer during 1996-2001.
The appointment of Baradar is seen as a positive signal from the Taliban for peace talks initiatives to end 18 years war in devastating Afghanistan.
