Actor John Cena was fast to offer a groveling apology to furious Chinese fans – in Mandarin – after referring to Taiwan as a country in a promotional interview on Taiwanese TV.
The Fast & Furious 9 star took to Sino Weibo social network to beg forgiveness for his apparent faux pas, but some commenters believed his motivations were purely financial.
“Gotta make sure he doesn’t piss off the Chinese market,” one said, while another sarcastically observed that Cena “can’t get hit by a spinebuster if you don’t have a spine”.
Cena is almost fluent in Mandarin after working to promote WWE wrestling in China for years.
