Iraqi President Meets Iran’s Foreign Minister in New York

The President of the Republic of Iraq, Barham Salih met with Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian on the sidelines of the UNGA in New York.

The close relations between the two neighboring countries and the peoples were discussed during the meeting, and how best to strengthen these ties in all sectors and develop further trade and economic ties between the two nations.

Talks focused on the need to give effect to the memorandums of understandings signed by the two countries.

Iraqi- Iranian relations are of critical importance for the both countries and the region as well, the Iraqi President said, while speaking about Iraq’s efforts to bring about peace, security and stability in the region.

Iraq seeks to ensure that it would be a point of cooperation and inclusion, rather than division, for all regional and international states, he said, so it is therefore, works toward bringing all positions together and coordinating common efforts in order to address the challenges presented by the terrorism, health conditions and the climate change.

Furthermore, a secure, stable and sovereign Iraq is a matter of great importance for achieving the stability in the region, he added.
Mr. Abdollahian affirmed his country’s commitment to supporting security and stability in Iraq.
Moreover, he emphasized Iran’s eagerness to further develop trade and economic ties with Iraq, and praised the diplomatic efforts currently led by Iraq to defuse tensions in the region.
