WASHINGTON, DC – Another innocent child caught in the crossfire.
A 9-year-old girl on an evening walk with a family member in Southeast D.C. was shot and wounded Dec. 14, police said.
During a press conference after the shooting, D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said the little girl was walking with her family in the street when shots were fired nearby.
“It’s just horrible to think that a 9-year-old — out here with her family member — getting struck by a stray bullet. Hopefully she’ll make a full recovery. There are no words for the sense of loss that our city will feel when they hear of this heartbreaking tragedy.
“We cannot tolerate senseless gun violence, and we must continue to come together to have the tough conversation about what we must do to eradicate it.”
The girl was shot near the intersection of 18th and T streets Southeast while she was walking with a family member. She has been taken to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
According to police, the little girl is conscious and breathing and is being treated at an area hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries.
Multiple children have recently been the victims of gun violence in the Washington, D.C., metro area.
