Analysis by PMOI/MEK
Iran, May 4, 2021—The Iranian regime is confronted with unprecedented domestic and international crises and finds no way out.
In a May 2 speech, Iranian regime supreme leader Ali Khamenei described the upcoming presidential elections in June as “an important opportunity.” But with only a month to go before the sham presidential elections, the power struggle between various factions in the regime has been increasing. Last week, the publication of an audio recording of regime foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif caused more division between various currents. Zarif had acknowledged in a secret interview that the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) dominates the regime’s policies, especially the foreign strategies that have resulted in various terrorist crimes in the region and across the world.
This is while during his New Year’s remarks, Khamenei had warned about causing division on the verge of the regime’s elections. But the situation became so tense that Khamenei openly warned, “Some of these recent remarks are a repeat of enemies remarks and those of the Americans, and this is a big mistake.”
Simultaneously, the regime’s harsh economic crisis has worsened. On May 2, the Aftab Yazd daily wrote, “2020 was the worst economic year in the last 40 years. There was a lot of pressure on the people.” This is while the regime has abandoned the Iranian people in the middle of a disastrous pandemic and continues to spend the country’s wealth on its nuclear program and the funding of its terror proxies in the Middle East.
In such circumstances, the Iranian society is more than ever outraged and dissatisfied. In the last four months ago, widespread social protests had erupted across the country by various classes including the retirees and pensioners.
On the occasion of the International Workers Day on May 1, workers protested in more than 20 cities with the slogans, “We will not rest until we achieve our rights.” This promises major changes in the future. Therefore, fearing the escalation of social protests, Khamenei warned in his recent speech about “security deviations” and the powder keg situation of the Iranian society.
At the same time, many state-run media warn for the increasing activities of the network of the Iranian Opposition inside Iran. The internal network of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), known as the Resistance Units, has been organizing anti-regime campaigns on the daily basis in all of Iran provinces.
The state-run website Bulletin Rouz wrote on May 2, “People and youths are active on the daily basis in demonstrations, strikes, writings on the walls, burning governmental institutions, and installing posters of Maryam Rajavi and Massoud Rajavi in public places.”
These activities have made the regime’s suppressive apparatus desperate. Only in April, the MEK Resistance Units have organized anti-regime activities in more than 250 areas in 27 provinces.
Therefore, Khamenei also acknowledged in his speech that “the youth are under constant intellectual attack organized by the enemies.”
