Google has discreetly converted millions of Android smartphones worldwide into compact seismographs. The Android Earthquake Alert system, introduced five years ago in Greece and New Zealand, now operates in 98 countries.
Using built-in accelerometers, Android devices detect ground vibrations and instantly relay data to the system, often seconds before the primary quake hits. This early warning can be critical for saving lives. By leveraging smartphones, Google has created the world’s largest earthquake detection network without relying on traditional seismic stations.
