Iran: growing dissent against regime leaders

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, December 19, 2020—As Iran’s economic conditions continue to deteriorate due to the corruption and destructive policies of the ruling mullahs, anti-regime slogans and public dissent are becoming more and more popular across the country.

In Tehran, Mashhad, and Hamadan, graffiti on walls portray slogans against regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Some of these slogans include “Down with Khamenei,” “Down with Ali Khamenei, Viva freedom,” and “Rise up to overthrow the regime of the Supreme Leader.”

At the forefront of these activities are the members of the Resistance Units, the network of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) inside Iran.

Iran is facing an explosive state since 2018. Five nationwide uprisings took place against the dire economic conditions as a result of the regime’s mismanagement and lootings.

As the main organized opposition movement that seeks regime change, the MEK has gained more support in society. Due to their organizing and leading role in protests, the MEK Resistance Units have expanded their activities. It has become a vast network of activists across the country, risking their lives every day to continue a campaign of regime change.

On December 18, the Resistance Units organized activities in Tehran, Mashhad, Gilan, Hamadan, Ramsar, Kerman, Fariman, Lahijan, and Lordegan.

In Tehran and Fariman, the Resistance Units installed huge posters and banners of Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), and Iranian Resistance leader Massoud Rajavi, echoing anti-regime slogans.

In Mashhad and other cities, they also took to graffiti and handwritten anti-regime slogans on the walls reading: “Down with Khamenei, hail to freedom.”

The continuation of these activities in the last two years shows MEK’s organizing capabilities and its broad social support. Regime officials, including Khamenei and regime President Hassan Rouhani, have constantly expressed their fear of the MEK’s growing support among the youths.

After the 2018 and 2019 uprisings, Khamenei made several speeches in which he stressed that the MEK had planned and organized the protests months in advance.

Also, in recent years, the rebellious spirit of the society has intensively grown, and the youth are constantly targeting the regime’s suppressive centers.

On Thursday, December 17, the rebellious youth in Shahriar torched a Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) Basij. The Basij are the most hated suppressive paramilitary force inside Iran. Its main role is to preserve the mullahs’ rule through repressive measures against protests and demonstrations. The Basij played a prominent role in quelling the November 2019 protests and are part of the regime’s new plan to increase repressive measures on the anniversary of the uprising.
