Bejing may already be developing “super soldiers”. “US intelligence shows that China conducted human experiments on members of the People’s Liberation Army in hopes of developing soldiers with biologically enhanced capabilities,” wrote then-director of the National Intelligence Service, John Ratcliffe, in a December 3 comment in the Wall Street Journal entitled “China is the No. 1 National Security Threat”.
It is not clear how far the Chinese military researchers have gone. However, they advocate the use of the CRISPR genetic engineering tool to improve human skills, and the Communist Party’s Central Military Commission “supports research into human performance enhancement and ‘novel’ biotechnology.”
